I have and older FVC 581 sounder that came off the boat but I left the thru hull transducer on.

I replaced the FVC581 with a Garmin 2006C chartplotter and added the GSD20 for a sounder. Also I mounted a trailer mount transducer on the far right side on the transome. I did this because the trim tabs cover the entire area.

I was thinking of putting the FVC581 back on to see if it works better than the GSD20.

The GSD20 works ok but I get a lot of turbulence because of where the transducer is mounted.

The other option is to replace the FVC581 transducer with a transducer for the GSD20.

Opinions please.

Regardless of the sounder, you won't get a decent view unless the transducer is forward close to the center of the boat. Garmin makes a great GPS, the sounder I'm not sure of. You can't beat Furuno but your 581 puts you back in the days of jackpoling tuna, no nets. I had a 582 and loved it, maybe more than the 585 I have now.

It seems that whatever you get it's rock cod you will be looking for the deepest .

I have the 582L with a thru hull xducer mounted center line in front of the engine. Reads great to 17 or 18 knots then it starts washing out.

Airmar makes top of the line transducers. To get good readings at high speed you definitely need a thru hull with high speed fairing. If you have a dual freq sounder, they have a single transducers that allows you to look at both freq simultaneously if sounder has capability. A little pricey but worth it.

Thanks for the info.

I reinstalled the 581 and used it this past weekend. The transducer mummed and the screen would freeze up. I think its time to replace the transducer with a thru hull for the GSD20 it would work better placed in front of the motor.
