9 Month Rub Rail Project on The Reel One

Now that the gallery is available, decided to upload some pictures of one of my larger projects, removing and restoring rub rails. I don't have the stainless steel cap on my rails like the newer Blackman's. These rails were screwed and plugged.

Hey Glen,

You can't be serious about the project taking 9 months? I'm looking at replacing mine, however, your nine month statement is starting to phsyc me out!

9 months in between fishing and other repairs/projects. Some of the finishing steps (6 coats Sikkens), multiple coats of clear Epifanes, only take about an hour to tape off and do each side, but that hour would have been on a non-fishing weekend day when I could spend an afternoon at the slip. That is what I meant by 9 months, started it that long ago, and just doing one step at a time.

If you have the stainless cap trim on the wood, I wouldn't bother doing as much as I did. Just plugging the screw holes and cutting/sanding down each plug takes a couple weeks.

Larry, we restored the original rails. Took them off and sanded out all the aging and wear. They are thinner now, but were re-usable.

My rub rails have been sanded and refinished to many times, so I am forced to replace with new teak.

Yours sure did come out looking great!
