TAMD40A Raw Water Pump Rebuild ?

My job to replace the impellers has turned into rebuilding the pumps. I installed the correct 'square ring' seals for the inlet and outlet pipes and confirmed these connections were not leaking. I raised the rpms and water started coming out of the vents. Looks like these seals are now bad.

I pulled one of the pumps apart and will get the rebuild kits next week.

1. What do you think of my parts? Can the shaft be repaired?

2. What type of greas do you use when you reassemble the parts?

3. Do I need a puller to remove the bearings from the shaft and a press to put them back on?

4. Does the drive pin need to be replaced?

I'd appreciate any reassembly advice you can pass along.

I believe the re-build kit will come with everything but the housing. The kit that came with my boat has a shaft, bearings ,seal, basically everything you show in your pictures.

The bad news, the box is 15 years old and has $386 written on the side of it.
You might fine a complete pump cheaper than the re-build kit.

I lube the seals and impeller with o-ring lube before assembly, but dish soap will work just as well.

San Diego Marine Exchange has a new pump for just over $200. I went through the leaky seal exercise. After pricing seals, impeller, cam plate, cover, etc., the new pump wasn't that much out of line. The real PIA is the strainer!! Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the replys Richard and Mike. I'll check out both sources. San Diego Marine exchange is a agreat source for boat stuff. I'll give them a call and see how much new pumps cost. Mine are different than the pumps on the 41 series engines.

RT. I checked SD marine Exchange. They only carry the small pumps. I've been buying parts from McDonnell marine for quite some time so I ordered a pair of pumps.

While talking to Brian, the mechanic I found there is a right and wrong way to install the 'dogbone' when reinstalling the pump. He said you need to put the dogbone in the coolant pump and then install the raw water pump. If the dogbone is installed in correctly, it will bend slightly and the engine will be hard to start.

Interestingly, the port motor is harder to start than the stbd motor and the dogbone is slightly worn out and might have been bent a little. I ordered a pair of these as well. I hope this cures the harder to start problem. I hope to get the parts installed next weekend.

Hey Old Blue,

I have TAMD40B pumps on my TAMD40A engines. The previous owner must have upgraded to BMW (bring more water) to the engine.

I bought the pumps at McDonnell Marine. List price is $392.00. After a discount, they were $352.00. Considering the rebuild kit lists at $350.00 and doesn't include an impeller, buying the new pumps are the right decision.

I'm installing the new stuff this Saturday. I'll update you on Sunday or Monday.

Are you sure yours are not AQAD40A Engines; I thought the TAMD's were inboards.

Spent the rainy day rummaging through a bunch (an I do mean a bunch) of 40a and 40b parts. The 40b pump is much bigger than the 40a pump. What about the strainer? Can anyone post a pic of the strainer for a 40b pump. Turns out my 40a has a 40b HE.

Much debate on operating temperature. One school says the magic number is 200 F (thermostats are 195F) while 170F is more comfortable. My 40a WOT, full bait tank. and 4 lard asses runs about 190F.

Update: The Mazola runs great in the tractor. Added about a quart to the 3 gallon tank. This would be the equivalent of BD8 ( 1 part veggie to 12 parts diesel). Put about 10 hours on the tractor mowing the weeds.

I believe my engines are TAMD40A. They are inboards. The boat was advertised as having TAMD40B engines but the plate on the engine, the engine and injection pump serial numbers all indicate they are TAMD40A engines.

I think Troy upgraded the raw water pumps to the larger 'B' pumps. That explains how I have 'A' engines but 'B' pumps.

By the way, I installed the two pumps today and fired the engines up. Both engines started easier, especially the port engine that was a little hard to start.

I have Perko strainers. I don't have the Volvo strainer that sits above the raw water pump.

I also finished my project to add switches to the batteries to the engines and replace all ground cables and power cables.

The list is started to get smaller.

Try this outfit. I was able to get indivisual parts for my pump and recently bought the complete pump for cheaper than anyone. I use a different pump than the rest of you but the selection there is huge.
