With only a few hours to devote to fishing this weekend, I challenged my bro in-law Matt to a light tackle halibut surf fishing toss off.

I was using the Berkley Power® Minnow Extra Scent http://www.berkley-fishing.com/dimg/1117248.jpg
and Matt was tossing Berkley® 3" Gulp!® Saltwater Pogy http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Item/12/11/51/i121151sn01.jpg

We were both fishing our bait drop shot style.

We met up at Torrey Pines just before the afternoon low tide and got right to work. Two cast in he's on, so I reeled up to assist with the beach landing. First fish tape out at 21" and I'm already feeling the pressure. A few cast later I've got a bend going and he comes over to assist with the release of 19" shortly.

That hole dried up so we move down the beach to work the next spot. A few cast in Matt hangs up on a rock and breaks off his rig. With him headed for high ground to re-tie I went to work releasing one more short and hooking into a solid fish just as he was coming back down to the water.

I worked her all the way into the shore break before she got her tail turned and took off into the sunset. When you fish 6 pound in the surf there isn't a lot you can do once they get the upper hand on ya.

That was the last fish we would hook before the tide turned and the water got dirty.
