Is there a restriction to modifying avatars?
I am unable to upload an avatar for my profile.

The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 29.3 KB (whichever is smaller). You need to reduce it before you upload. If that doesn't do it, forward the picture to me and I'll give it a try.
