Default Ensenada on The Reel One 8/14 - 8/17

Headed out Sunday morning 8/14 for a vacation week out of the Coral in Ensenada. Friends Harry and Charles on board, fully loaded with everything from sleeping matresses to a coffee urn.

Day 1: Stopped on some numbers I have for ling cod by the rockpile for about 10-12 lings in about an hour, along with some small vermillion. Kept a few lings and rockfish for our first dinner cooked for us by the restaurant. I always try to pick up a ling since trying ling sashimi last year... yummmm.

Day 2: Headed offshore to about 117.00 x 31.00, saw Dorado or Yellowtail under several paddies, didn't have bait since the bait boat wasn't working on Monday, so it was hard to get them to bite anything. Harry drops an iron about 200ft down and gets bit on the way up. After about 15 mins, he brings in a 50lb Opah. The only other fish was a Dorado on the troll.

Day 3: Got bait, started with the idea of going south inside. Got the first 20lb Yellowtail off a paddy only about 16 miles south of the Coral. I took us offshore since the bait was looking good and I thought those Dorado would be all ours. Ended up on paddy after paddy with fish, but few bites. Finally found a paddy holding Yellowtail that were hungry and picked up 7 more for 8 total, all 18-21lbers. Good fighters.

Day 4: Later start resulted in the last scoop of almost dead bait from the bait boat sitting in red tide. Went south, then out to the banda, then over to Todos Santos. Saw some fish again under paddies, but no biters.

Let's see if I can paste pics.

We took some Opah, some of every cut (there are 3-4 distinctly different cuts on an Opah) up to the restaurant and had them cook it every which way but burnt for dinner, including sashimi. It was all good. No, it was all fantastic. I posted a picture on BD of my cutting board with a spread of Opah fillets because you can see how different they look.

As for Marlins, saw a couple of big splashes in the distance, but upon investigation, never saw a Marlin. Drug a couple jigs around for awhile when we caught the Dorado on a tuna jethead. I personally have still never seen a Marlin sleeper, tailer. Had some long releases in many years past that came unbuttoned so fast, I didn't even get a good look.

    Default Opah!

Good job Glenn! Good to see your trip was a success.

I love the Coral, except the red tide bait thing is getting real old. Regardless, we are going back tomorrow. Nice chloro shots that way which I can't resist.

How does one get in on the fun of this friendly competition? Good luck!

    Default Glenn,

I see a Blackman and a Harry and an opah on Kira's site but no mention of the Wizard. Fire your PR dude!

We are back in the water tomorrow. Thanks for the link, I sent the info to join in on the fun.
